Correlations to Curriculum Standards

Silent e
Letter TV III—Silent e

Over the past few years, AIT content experts have correlated hundreds of video programs and lesson plans to curriculum standards for all states and the District of Columbia. This work has given AIT staff rich experience and familiarity with each state’s unique standards framework and content.

AIT has established an effective, rigorous process for conducting standards correlations:

  • professional educators and information specialists at AIT watch each video resource
  • the video content is compared to the state’s curriculum standards
  • qualified and direct matches are made between the two
  • correlations are conducted for all levels established by the state

Most states have two levels of standards in their framework; some have one or three. Because states employ their own method of identifying and organizing curriculum standards, each state’s unique naming and/or numbering system is used to identify and record the matched standards, as is the exact text from the authorized department of education standards documentation.

AIT does not employ any intermediary systems or shortcuts to offer approximate matches. The process of creating exact matches is essential to ensure valid and useful results. Intermediary matching systems can potentially miss good matches or create false matches, depending on the variable quality and completeness of program metadata.

Standards correlations follow strict control procedures that ensure consistency and accuracy. All correlation records are quality checked by at least one staff person who is trained in the correlation procedures but has not been involved in the actual correlation for that program or series.

AIT provides the standards correlation metadata in a simple database, which can be linked to import into any “search and play” application. AIT also provides a discrepancy report that lists any programs not matching standards and other anomalies in the correlation results.
